Chinese Folding Fan

Folding fans emerged during the Zhou Dynasty, over 2,000 years ago, for cooling purposes. In the Han Dynasty, affordable bamboo and cattail-leaf fans gained popularity. The Song Dynasty saw the introduction of silk fans, favored by palace women, evolving into various shapes like round, oval, and floral designs.

Later on, scholars adorned these folding fans with calligraphy and paintings, turning them into essential exquisite accessories that showcased their social status, aesthetic preferences, and accomplishments.

Care Instructions

How to care for your Hanfu?

  • Hanfu garments are mostly delicate, especially those with embroidery, so handwashing is preferred.
  • If you choose to machine wash, use the gentlest cycle and place the garment in a laundry bag for protection.
  • After washing, hang the Hanfu indoors in a well-ventilated area to dry.
  • Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

  • Store your Hanfu in breathable fabric garment bags to protect it.
  • Avoid hanging Hanfu for long periods, as it may stretch the fabric. Instead, carefully fold the garments and store them flat or stack them neatly in a storage container.
