Northern and Southern dynasties (4th-6th century AD) were marked by frequent wars, leading to mass migrations and convergence of cultures. Han Chinese in the south adopted clothing styles from northern minorities, such as trousers and tight-sleeved jackets. Conversely, rulers from the northern minorities favoured Han Chinese court dress. People during this period wore robes, skirts, trousers, short jackets, and sleeveless jackets. Trousers were popular among young people, while women primarily wore skirts. Southern dynasties’ tomb images indicate the continuance of long, wide-sleeved robes fastened with a girdle over a straight-neck undergarment.

In the Northern dynasties (386-581 AD), ordinary women wore short jackets and coats. The Northern Wei dynasty's founders, the Xianbei ethnic group, first wore traditional nomadic clothes as a sign of their ruling status. Depictions of Xianbei-style dress show knee-length tunics with narrow sleeves, front openings, and various collar styles. Men wore pants while ladies wore long skirts.

The persistence of nomadic clothing in China continued until the Tang dynasty. Foreign immigrants from Central Asia migrated in China around the end of the Northern and Southern dynasties, resulting in a diversity of cultures. Mural paintings from the Tomb of Xu Xianxiu depict attire influenced by Central Asia and nomadic designs. Xu Xianxiu's wife is portrayed wearing Han Chinese attire with cross-collar and wide sleeves, incorporating alterations like a high waistline and wide standing collar.
