After the Hongwu Emperor took over from the Yuan dynasty, he wanted to bring back traditional Chinese customs, including clothing. The Ming dynasty's clothing was influenced by earlier dynasties like the Zhou, Han, Tang, and Song. Some Mongol styles still had an impact on early Ming rulers. Empresses in the Ming dynasty wore dresses similar to those in the Song dynasty, adorned with dragon and phoenix designs.

Changes were made to Hanfu in the Ming dynasty, like sleeves that fit closer to the body and collars that were round in shape. They used gold and silver buckles to fasten clothing and collars. Mamian Qun (Mamian skirts) and pleated skirts became trendy. Women in the late Ming dynasty wore a long and wide coat called Pifeng. They also paired Mamian Qun or pleated skirts with ru (top) or Ao (round-collar tops)  or Bijia (sleeveless jackets).

Additionally, the Ming dynasty saw the popularity of a garment accessory called Yunjian or cloud collar. This decorative item was worn on the collar of robes, falling onto the chest and shoulders.
